Stockholm Treaty Standards
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) is a global treaty aimed at protecting the environment and human health from chemicals that are resistant to degradation in the environment, have a widespread geographical presence, accumulate in fatty tissue of animals and humans, and have harmful effects on public health and/or the environment. Initially, 12 POPs were identified under the convention and new amendments and additions are reviewed as needed. The Stockholm POPs currently include chemicals in the PCB, dioxin, furan, flame retardant, pesticide, industrial chemical, PFAS, paraffin, and PCN classes.
