Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO)
The deuterated dimethyl sulfoxide (CD3SOCD3) (DMSO-d6) produced at CIL is extremely pure and is a popular solvent for a variety of applications in organic chemistry and molecular biology due to its favorable properties. Commonly used as a solvent in NMR spectroscopy, DMSO-d6 is a highly polar solvent that can solubilize many organic and inorganic compounds. DMSO-d6 has a high boiling point of 189°C, making it suitable for experiments requiring prolonged heating. It also has a melting point of 18°C, freezing close to room temperature, so one may need to thaw it in a warm-water bath prior to use while taking care to avoid water contamination.
CIL offers many options for DMSO-d6, including two different enrichment levels, 99.9% (DLM-10) and 99.96% (DLM-34) that are readily available off the shelf. These can be purchased as standalone solvents or containing tetramethylsilane (TMS) to be used as reference for chemical shifts. DMSO-d6 also comes in a variety of packaging sizes, including both serum bottles or ampoules.
DMSO-d6 shelf life: 6 months
